Below is an excerpt from my English translated version of A Great Journey across the Chang Tang Plateau, an article on the latest issue of Wc. Since We publishes English articles along with their Chinese translations in a half-English, half-Chinese layout, I should have expected that Wc would work just the other way round. But somehow I ignored that, worked my head off and produced a translation that I believed to be "naturally worded and appropriate in the cultural context of the English language". However, it did not "measure up" and was reworked by some reputable and skillful reviser, whose name later took my place as the leading translator of this article. The revised version that they later published is a very precise or, by their standards, 'faithful' Chinese-English translation. You can find an equivalent in the translated text for every word or expression of the original. I may never have made it on my own. I cannot do such kind of 'faithful' translation without ever compromising natural fluency and the beauty of the language. So I think the reviser deserves the credit he was given.
